After a recent championship run, the Lumen Christi girls soccer team is turning to a new group of freshmen to stay in championship contention.
Among the most exciting newcomers is striker Madilynn Stergakos, whose attacking instincts and natural goal-scoring ability could be seen on display in their opening game, in which she scored two goals. Madilynn came in with a clear benchmark this season. “My goal this season is to score five plus goals,” said Stergakos.
On the defensive side, Maddy Scott is expected to be a steady and reliable presence. With a physical style of play, she brings a level of toughness that can help anchor the back line. Her level of physicality should help her adjust to the higher pace of play. Scott, who has been playing since she was three years old, looks to take her game to the next level. When asked about Scott’s impact on the team, senior captain Paige Lefere said that “She has not struggled with the change of pace at all.”
Joining them is fellow teammate Tristin Johnson, who adds depth and versatility to the squad. Tristin started off the season on defense, but was recently subbed in at forward, where she had a hat trick against cross-town rival Jackson High. She brings more experience in big moments, as she was a key player in the girl’s basketball championship run this winter. To get ready for key matchups, Tristin likes to listen to Young Thug.
According to Cora Botke, the freshman class has already seen a lot of playing time, and has contributed in a very meaningful way. “We have individual goals, but we also have team goals. We would like to finish with a winning record, a CHSL championship, and a state title, as well as to come together as a team.” There are no cliques or groups, just one united team.
This group of freshmen will play a key role in the return to championship form for the Titans this season.
