Band Members from Lumen Christi high school took the stage on January 31 for the
annual Solo & Ensemble Festival. This event is judged on how well a school’s
band members could perform a hard piece. Two of these band performers were senior Becca Page and junior Evie Wentzloff, who
presented a duet called Twelve Duets K. 487 No. 6 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The duo had about one month to prepare their piece, which is less time than is usual. In
the week leading up to the festival, they would meet before school every day to practice. For
Evie, this was her first Solo & Ensemble, while Becca has performed in this event before.
On the day of the event, the judges were about 2 whole hours behind schedule, this only
added to the performers’ nerves. Despite the delay, the wait for results after their performance
was brief. The pair said their biggest musical challenge was maintaining a steady flow between
the two of them. “In a duet, if one person falls off the beat, it affects everything.” With their
performance complete, the judges awarded Becca and Evie with the “Superior 1” ranking which
is the highest of rankings, qualifying them for the state event. They now are preparing for that state event which, will be held on
March 21 at Okemos High School.
