Products meant to support our female students in Lumen Christi’s girls’ bathroom have been disappearing, forcing the Basket Committee to limit what it can provide. The Basket Committee assembles baskets stocked with feminine hygiene products and other necessities for the girls’ bathroom. Now, let’s see how they are trying to battle this problem.
Mallory Arcaro, a member of the committee, said that the problem came to light last school year. “We noticed that bottles of lotion, spray deodorant, and feminine products were disappearing right after they were put in the bathrooms. It got so bad we had to take away the baskets and send out an email to all the girls’ parents before putting them back in the bathroom.” School counselor Ms. Freel described the behavior bluntly, saying, “That’s just greedy!”
When asked whether she knew who was taking the items, Arcaro said she did not, but noted that the problem improved after the email was sent. The committee was not the only one to notice the issue. Ms. Freel also acknowledged the problem, saying that some students take more than they need.
This year, the problem has returned. According to Mallory, they have taken out all bottles that were in the baskets and now stick to putting a few necessities in them until they have found a solution. Ms. Freel said consequences could include the removal of the baskets and parents being notified again. She also stated, “Expectations are clear, and these baskets are a privilege.” For now, the committee plans to continue limiting the items they supply until there is a productive solution.
