Lumen Christi runner Sam Schroeder made history at the state cross country meet. Even though Lumen Christi has been one of the best girls’ teams for many years, no girl had ever won an individual state championship. Sam became the first one to do it.
At the beginning of the race, Sam stayed with the front group. She ran calmly and saved her energy for later. The course was hard, but she kept going. In the last mile, she started to speed up.
But she wasn’t sure she could win.
“There was only one time, and it was during the last mile,” Sam said. “First place was far ahead of me, and I didn’t know if I was going to catch her.”
Sam kept trying. She ran faster and faster until she passed the girl in first place. The crowd cheered as she crossed the finish line with a big smile on her face.
Sam’s coaches and teammates were very proud of her. Her win shows how hard she worked all season. Now she is an inspiration for younger Titan runners who want to follow in her footsteps.
