Mr. Ryan Miller, not only a passionate English and Lit teacher as well as charismatic cross country coach, but also the man that guides students through their tough transition from high school to college. Going from high school to college can be very challenging and oftentimes, confusing. This is especially amplified, since many students can receive messages and letters, with colleges asking them to visit. Here at Lumen Christi, students can turn to Mr. Miller for assistance. Mr. Miller said, “my goal is to make the next chapter of everyone’s life a bit easier.”
To do this, Mr. Miller forms personal or group discussions with the students, taking their likes as well as their dislikes, in order to create a path to success that is individualized for them. For example, a student that Mr. Miller had spoken with had interests in becoming an electrician, but didn’t want to spend four years earning a degree. Miller had meticulously devised a plan on which trade school for them to attend, while looking at job outlook, pay, and estimate of years to complete the training in order to become a master electrician. Miller stated, “I was quite pleased with that plan.” With the help of Mr. Miller, the student had a complete plan for success. The amazing part is that Mr. Miller has guided many more students in his time as a college advisor here.
College advising is very important, as like stated before, going from high school to college is difficult and disorienting. Having a person that is willing to help with college related questions and concerns can help reorient this process, and set a person up for success, especially when both the student and the advisor are open to new ideas. In recent years, all people have to be open to new ideas in this rapidly changing world. It can bring up new career opportunities, but also difficult problems with genius solutions that are yet to come.
