Lumen Christi is adding new safety features this fall, starting with expanded key fob access and more regular camera monitoring.
President Stephen Rajzer said more classroom-side doors will soon have key fob readers, with staff giving input on which entrances they use most. The broken reader by the commons will also be repaired. Unlike keys, fobs can’t be copied and can be shut off if lost, giving the school more control over who comes in.
Another change is the morning gate procedure. The gate now closes shortly after classes begin, forcing late arrivals to use the main entrance. While meant to improve safety, some students and staff have wondered how effective it is, since drivers can still reach the same parking lot from another spot. It is inconvenient when the gate is closed because you kind of have to do a little zig zag to get into the parking lot.
Principal Mr. Learned also announced that LC parent and retired Michigan State Police officer Steve Temelko will now be helping monitor the school’s camera system. He plans to be on campus regularly, especially during Mass and other busy times.
School leaders say the goal is simple: improve safety while keeping things as normal as possible for students and staff.
