The Lumen Christi Titans showed both dominance and resilience over the last two weeks of play.
In Week 2, senior Paul Sattler and junior Benn Gaston powered the offense, combining for all eight of the Titans’ touchdowns. On the defensive side, seniors Nolan Huff and Jack Fitzpatrick set the tone with 25 tackles between them. Huff described his mindset simply: “To kill or be killed. It’s about life or death out there—and I don’t plan on dying.” Behind the strong performance of the offensive line, the Titans rolled to a 54–34 win over the Notre Dame Prep Irish.
Week 3 brought a tougher test against Grand Rapids Catholic Central. Junior Wes Learned delivered one of the game’s highlights with a 40-yard touchdown catch, but the Titans struggled to find consistency outside of a few explosive plays. Learned, who left the game after taking a hard hit, said afterward, “I feel good—just ready to get healthy, make a return, and prove the haters wrong.”
Head Coach Herb Brogan admitted GRCC controlled the line of scrimmage, saying the Cougars “played harder and were more physical at the line.” Learned echoed the team’s determination to bounce back: “We played a decent game—it just wasn’t enough. But we’ll be ready for U of D in Week 4.”
Despite the 28–14 loss, the Titans remain optimistic. Huff pointed to his own progress on defense as a sign of the team’s preparation: “I’ve improved on tackling and laying down boom sticks. The preparation carries over by knowing what to do so I can play fast.”
With lessons learned from the tough matchup, the Titans are looking forward to responding with energy and focus as they prepare for their next challenge against University of Detroit Jesuit.
