The Titans boys’ soccer team has opened their season with a 3-8 record, but the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Nearly every game has been closely contested, with the Titans showing fight, resilience, and flashes of dominance.
Senior leaders Manny Mercado and Anthony “Pebbles” Wetzel have been reliable offensive forces, scoring in nearly every match. Wetzel’s playmaking ability has stood out, while Mercado’s consistency has kept the Titans in striking distance all season long.
But this team is more than its stars. Several unsung heroes have made critical contributions, including sophomore George Martin, junior Oliver Stevens, and senior goalkeeper Joe Mietelka, who has been tested often and delivered countless saves.
The Titans’ best performance so far came in a commanding 6-2 home victory over Maple Valley on Saturday, September 13. It was the first game where the Titans fully controlled the action. Stevens led the way with two goals and two assists, while Wetzel added two goals and three assists in a standout performance that electrified teammates and fans alike.
That win could prove to be a turning point, as the Titans prepare for a challenging stretch against ranked opponents. Cristo Rey (#15 in Division 4) and University Liggett (#9 in Division 4) are both familiar foes who handed the Titans tough losses earlier in the season. This time, the Titans are determined to flip the script.
Beyond the scoreboard, the team has enjoyed strong support from the LC community. Whether it’s classmates, parents, or their biggest non-parent fans — Mr. Iding and Fr. Miguel — the Titans know they’re not battling alone.
With standout seniors, rising underclassmen, and a fighting spirit that has kept them in every contest, the Titans believe their best soccer is still ahead.
