Senior Anthony Wetzel is best known for his elite skills on the soccer pitch, but this fall he is taking his kicking abilities to another type of football. For the 2025 Lumen Christi Football season, Wetzel is stepping up as the new varsity kicker, replacing last year’s Andy Salazar. While he continues to play a key role on the soccer team, this transition marks a new chapter in his high school sports career, right at a time that most people would be wrapping theirs up.
When asked about the similarity between kicking a soccer ball and a football, Anthony noted that “it is somewhat similar, but kicking a football requires more precision and a different follow-through.” To perfect this transition, he was brought on board during the summer after speaking to Coach Herb Brogan at the end of last year, and has been training since then.
The soccer player-turned kicker is thriving in the Lumen Christi football program and has nothing but great things to say about the team and the coaching staff. “The team is very supportive and committed,” he said, before praising their grit. “Their work ethic is great, and I’m glad to be a part of this season.”
As he steps up into this new key role, number 19 looks forward to a season full of new experiences, extra points, and game-deciding kicks. There is no doubt that come November, he will have established himself among a long tradition of great Lumen Christi kickers.
