While playing in honor of their teammate who was battling cancer, the Michigan Selects Hockey Team recently won the MAHA Tournament Championship. The Michigan Selects Team is composed of players from all over southeast Michigan including a handful of players from Lumen Christi. These players include Michael Palmer, Jack O’Shea, Luke Dumont, and Landon Alley. All these boys represent the Lumen Christi hockey team and what we stand for on the Michigan Selects Team.
This is the second fall season for the Michigan Selects and second for most of the LC boys. This season has had immense success. The team has won 3 of 4 tournaments and is currently ranked 8th in the country for Tier II 16U hockey. Despite the great amount of success this team has experienced, nothing has been more important to these boys than playing for their teammate, Jacob Burbank. Burbank was a 16 year old goalie who has played travel hockey and high school hockey for several years. He battled cancer twice, and unfortunately lost his battle on October 22, 2024–just 2 days after the Michigan Selects team won the playoff championship. To honor Jacob, the team wore specially made “Burbank jerseys” during playoff weekend. Additionally, both team members and parents held a fundraiser to support the Burbank family. The team hopes to continue its successful run toward a state championship in the spring when the split season resumes. They will forever play in honor of their great teammate, Jacob Burbank.
