Are you looking for a way to improve your leadership skills? If you want to help lead others, get service hours, and get free pizza and snacks, look no further than Jackson’s Youth Advisory Committee. In the committee, also known as YAC, students from all across Jackson County meet twice a month during the school year to discuss grants sent in. These grants fit three categories: mini grants, mental health grants, and youth impact grants. When YAC meets, they review these grants and determine whether or not they will fund these causes.
Lumen has a strong representation in YAC right now, as sophomores Rachel DeVries, Wilson Sheldon, Helen Lefere, Zoie Scott, and Allison Wheeler are members, as well as junior Kathleen McClure. When asked why she enjoys YAC so much, Allison said “I love YAC because I feel heard as a representative of the youth in my community”. Along with monthly meetings, there is also an opportunity to go to a fun, leadership-filled YAC camp over the summer. Wilson and Zoie, pictured above, both participated last year, saying they had a lot of fun meeting new people and learning new things. The Youth Advisory Committee is a great place to meet new people, increase your leadership skills, and help your community (and get service hours!).
