Colorguard, otherwise known as Flag, is the group of colorfully clad students performing on the field at halftime, waving their Lumen colored flags in special routines. This year, three sophomores joined Flag for the first time; Rachel DeVries, Cecilia Saucedo, and Jaskiran Lubana. These sophomores joined the ranks of fellow sophomores Kennedy Laura and Adriana Berry, as well as seniors Mia Sanchez and Aanchal Kaur. Mia Sanchez said that the “program is the largest it’s been since they restarted it (Flag) recently.”.
When asked why she joined Colorguard, the enthusiastic Rachel DeVries said that she “…enjoys Band and the environment.” She had done Band in years past, but decided this year to try something new, while continuing to be a part of the band culture at Lumen. Jaskiran Lubana said that her friend, senior Aanchal Kaur, asked her to join and Jaskiran, wanting to spend as much time with her senior friend before she left Lumen as possible, joined Flag. This sentiment of joining to spend more time with senior friends was echoed by Cecilia Saucedo, who said she admires Mia and wants to learn more from her, especially in Flag.
When asked, the returning Flag members all agreed that the new sophomore members were all great additions to Colorguard. Adriana Berry exclaimed that she is proud of how quickly they have adapted and that they “…listen to our input and try to adjust.”, which are crucial to learning the complicated routines with plenty of twists and flips of the flag. Aanchal Kaur agreed with Adriana, saying that the new Flags “…take our criticism really well and adapt…” She as well as all the other returning and new members all agree that their hours of working hard to perfect their routines has brought them closer together, and they are excited to see how the rest of the season will unfold.
