Freshman Mckenna Reardon had a big surgery recently. She had surgery for her hip in the first week of November. She injured it badly in her eighth grade volleyball season. She popped her hip out which caused hip dysplasia. She had to end her volleyball and dance seasons early because of it.
Mckenna was able to have a great volleyball season this year however. She also plans to play club volleyball in the spring. Her hip was in pain this season but she was cleared to play knowing that she would need the surgery eventually. The surgery was a PAO, or periacetabular osteotomy. The doctors had to break her hip bone into four pieces, rotate them, and then screw them back in. They also repaired her labral tear in a separate incision.
Mckenna’s recovery is going pretty well. She said the first week after the surgery was the worst and it was very painful and she was just getting used to everything. She said everything is normal now and she had adjusted to using her wheelchair at school and crutches at home and other places. Mckenna is now able to bear her weight without crutches or a wheelchair and she continues to strengthen her hip through physical therapy.
